Flood affects country's 64 upazilas: State Minister
State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Dr Md Enamur Rahman MP on Saturday said that 64 upazilas of 10 districts of the country have been affected by flood.
Out of the affected areas, a terrible situation is prevailing in Sylhet and Sunamganj, he said, adding that the two districts did not witness such a flood in the last 122 years.
The state minister made the disclosure while briefing on the overall flood situation at his Secretariat office in the capital of Dhaka this afternoon.
He said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and all the agencies of the country work together on the floor, and adequate relief and rescue activities are on.
Army, Navy, and Coast Guard are conducting rescue operations and the army will continue its activities until rescue operations, he also said.
This year monsoon floods first hit Sylhet on May 15. According to the statistics of the Bangladesh Development Board, the district saw the highest water rise in 18 years during the May floods but the ongoing flood surpassed the record of last month.
The low-lying areas of Sylhet were flooded since Wednesday and from Thursday afternoon, it take a terrible turn, and between 12 noon on Thursday and early Friday, most areas of the city submerged, damaging houses and leaving thousands of people marooned.
