10 rivers flowing above danger level, floods may worsen further

Ten rivers in the north and northeast of the country are flowing above the danger level at 13 points due to heavy rains and downpours, causing floods in the regions.

The rivers are Brahmaputra, Dudhkumar, Dharla, Teesta, Surma, Sarigowain, Old Surma, Jadukata, Someshwari, and Bhugai. 

The flood situation in Sylhet and Rangpur regions may deteriorate further as heavy rains continue, said the Flood Forecasting and Warning Center (FFWC) of the Bangladesh Water Development Board on Friday. 

According to the numerical weather prediction, there is a chance of medium to heavy rainfall in the country's north and northeast parts in the next 72 hours, said FFWC executive engineer Md Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan.

As a result, the rising flow of all the main rivers, including Brahmaputra-Jamuna, Ganga-Padma, Surma, Kushiara, Teesta, Dharla, and Dudkumar, may continue in the next 48 hours, he said.

The flood situation in Sylhet, Sunamganj, and Netrakona districts will likely worsen further in the next 24 hours and at the same time, the flood situation in low-lying parts of Lalmonirhat, Nilphamari, Rangpur, and Kurigram districts may also deteriorate, Arifuzzaman added.
