Depression turns into cyclonic storm ‘Asani’ over southeast Bay

The deep depression over southeast Bay and adjoining area moved north-westwards, and intensified into cyclonic storm "Asani" over the same area, said a Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) bulletin on Sunday.

"The cyclonic storm remained about 1255kilometres South-Southwest of Chattogram port, 1250 kilometres South of Mongla port and 1205 kilometres South of Payra port at 6am today. It is likely to intensify further and move in a North-westerly direction," it added.

The bulletin said the maximum sustained wind speed within 54 kilometres of the cyclonic storm centre is about 62kph, rising to 88kph in gusts or squalls.

Sea will remain very rough near the cyclonic centre as maritime ports of Chittagong, Cox's bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to lower signal no. one but instead hoist distant warning signal no. two, it added.

All fishing boats and trawlers over North Bay and deep sea are advised to remain close to the coast and proceed with caution and asked them not to venture into the deep sea.
