AL leader, young woman shot dead in Dhaka

An Awami League leader and a young woman were shot dead by the miscreants in Shahjahanpur area in the capital on Thursday night.

Deceased Zahidul Islam Tipu, 54, was former general secretary of Motijheel Thana Awami League, Dhaka South City AL office secretary Riaz Uddin told Jago News.

And dead Samia Afrin Priti, 24, was a student of Begum Badrunnessa Government Girls' College in the capital.

It was learned that some miscreants opened fire at Tipu's microbus in front of Islamia Hospital around 10 pm and Priti was hit by a bullet when she was on a rickshaw, leaving the duo and the vehicle driver injured.

Later, they were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctors declared Tipu and Priti dead.

Monotosh Bishwas, assistant commissioner of Sabujbagh Zone under police's Motijheel Division, confirmed the matter to Jago News.

No one was detained in this connection so far, he said, adding that surrounding CCTV footage is being collected.

Priti's father Jamal Uddin said her daughter was on a rickshaw at Shahjahanpur during the incident. Suddenly a bullet pierced her.

However, Farhana Islam Dolly, wife of the late Tipu, lodged a case with Shahjahanpur Police Station in this connection.
