HC issues rule against CEC for contempt of court
The High Court (HC) today issued a contempt of court rule against Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal for not registering Ganasamhati Andolon as a political party in around three years after it has directed to do so.
In the rule, the HC asked the CEC to explain in four weeks why he should not be punished for committing contempt of court by violating its order.
A HC bench, comprising Justice Mamnun Rahman and Justice Khondker Diliruzzaman, issued the rule after hearing a petition filed by Ganasamhati Andolon Chief Coordinator Zonayed Saki.
The HC after hearing a Ganosamhati Andolan’s writ petition on April 11, 2019 directed the Election Commission to register Ganosamhati Andolan as a political party within 30 days.
