SUST students end hunger strike after 7 days

A group of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) students, who went on a fast unto death on January 19 demanding the removal of the Vice Chancellor (VC) Professor Farid Uddin, ended their strike on Wednesday morning.

They broke their strike sipping water offered by renowned writer and former SUST professor Dr Muhammad Zafar Iqbal and his wife professor Dr Yesmin Haque at 10:20am.

Earlier, Dr Zafar along with his wife arrived in SUST around 4am.

He told the students that a high level delegation from the government went to his house in Dhaka and a discussion about SUST situation was held with them. They assured him that the demand of the students will be met.

On January 13, a group of SUST students started agitation programme demanding the three-point demand including removal of Begum Sirajunnesa Chowdhury Hall Provost Zafrin Ahmed Liza.

On January 16, the agitated students confined the VC in a room of IICT building. Later, police went to the spot to rescue the VC and they locked in a clash with the students. At that time, some students were injured as police charged batons and fired sound grenades and rubber bullets on them. On the day, police also filed a case against 300 unnamed students.

On January 19, 23 students started fast unto death programme demanding removal of the VC and later four more students joined them on January 23.
