SUST students start fast-unto-death seeking VC's resignation
A group of students of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology went on fast-unto-death on the campus on Wednesday afternoon demanding the resignation of Vice-Chancellor Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed.
As many as 24 students began the programme in front of the VC's residence around 3 pm, and they, later, held a press conference in this regard.
They threatened to continue their fast-unto-death until the university's vice-chancellor, proctorial body, and student welfare adviser step down.
Mentioning that they won't eat any kind of food, including liquid one, during the fasting, the students said the university administration and vice-chancellor have to take responsibility if any student dies due to not taking food.
Earlier on Tuesday night, a group of students announced to go on fast-unto-death if the vice-chancellor doesn't resign by 12 noon on Wednesday.
They said they began their movement over different problems at the second female student hall on January 13.
On January 16, police charged batons, hurled sound grenades and rubber bullets on them in front of the VC and proctorial body, leaving more than 40 students injured, they said.
"We no longer want such autocratic VC, proctor, and student welfare adviser. We have sent an open letter to President (M Abdul Hamid)," they added.
The protesting students also demanded the withdrawal of the case filed against them by police.
