The Bangladesh government recorded 8,407 new COVID-19 cases and 10 deaths in the last 24 hours. 

With this, the total infections stood at 16,32,794 and fatalities rose to 28,164, a health directorate press release said on Tuesday.

As many as 35,054 samples were tested in the past day.

During the period, 475 more patients recovered from the illness, taking the total number of recoveries to 15,53,795.

Bangladesh, however, first reported its coronavirus cases on March 8, 2020. 

The virus first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December 2019 and then it spread to other countries.

To date, the epidemic infected 331,836,020 people and killed 5,565,761 across the globe, according to Worldometer, a website that compiles the number of new coronavirus cases and deaths from it.

However, the total number of people who recovered from the virus reached 269,289,998 across the world.
