Fire destroys 1200 shanties in Rohingya camp

A devastating fire destroyed around 1200 shanties at a Rohingya camp in Ukhiya upazila of Cox's Bazar district on Sunday evening.

Md Sihab Kaiser Khan, the commanding officer of Armed Police Battalion-8, confirmed the development.

The fire broke out at Block-B of Camp No. 16 in Shafiullah Kata area under Palangkhali union at about 5:15 pm and then engulfed Block-C, APN-8 additional superintendent Md Kamran Hossain said. 

Being informed, officer course of APBN-8 and the firefighters jointly brought the blaze under control in around two hours' frantic efforts, he said.

It was primarily learned that the fire originated from a gas stove, the official added. 

There were no immediate reports of casualties in the incident, he also said.
