Dewanganj mayor suspended for assaulting govt officer

Jamalpur’s Dewanganj Municipality mayor Shahnewaz Shahanshah has been suspended temporarily from his post for assaulting a government officer at an event organized on the occasion of the Victory Day.

A gazette notification signed by Local Government Ministry deputy secretary Farzana Mannan was issued in this connection on Monday.

According to the source, the mayor hurled abuses at Upazila Secondary Education Officer Md Meher Ullah, presenter of the event held on the Dewanganj Government High School premises, and also slapped him twice on December 16.

Later, Meher Ullah submitted a written complaint to the Upazila Nirbahi Officer in this regard. He also filed a case against the mayor with Dewanganj Police Station.
