Mayor Jahangir suspended
Gazipur City Corporation Mayor Md Jahangir Alam has been suspended, six days after his expulsion from Awami League.
The Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development & Co-operatives suspended him, Minister Md Tazul Islam said at a press briefing on Thursday.
He said, "Several allegations against Gazipur Mayor Jahangir Alam were submitted at Ministry and these were accepted for investigation after review.
"There is a binding of suspending any elected public representative, especially mayor, if allegations are brought against him and taken these into account to settle through investigation.
"That is why Mayor Jahangir has been suspended."
Asked about the allegations against Jahangir, Minister said there are different allegations that include grabbing land, constructing infrastructure without paying compensation, coercing, etc.
Earlier, Jahangir Alam was expelled from Awami League as its Gazipur city unit general secretary for his derogatory remarks on Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
