DU student rape: Court accepts charges against Mamun, acquits Nur

A court in Dhaka on Wednesday accepted the charges against Bangladesh Chhatra Odhikar Parishad convener Hasan Al Mamun in a case filed over the alleged rape of a Dhaka University student. 

The court of Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-2 Judge Muhammad Habibur Rahman Siddiqui passed the order and fixed November 30 to hold next hearing on charge framing.

Alongside, the court acquitted former Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) vice president (VP) Nurul Haque Nur and four others in the lawsuit. 

The four others who got acquittal are Chhatra Odhikar Parishad joint conveners Nazmul Hasan Shohag, and Md Saiful Islam, its vice president Nazmul Huda, and DU student Abdullah Hil Baki.

On the day, the defense lawyer prayed bail for the Hasan Al Mamun but the court turned down the plea.

Earlier on Tuesday, he surrendered before the court and sought bail but the court after a hearing ordered to send him to jail.

A postgraduate student of DU's Islamic Studies department lodged the case with the capital's Lalbagh Police Station on September 20, 2020 on charge of raping her, and abetting the rape.
