Nizamul Huq appointed as Chairman of Press Council

The government has appointed retired justice of the appellate division of the Supreme Court Md Nizamul Huq as the Chairman of Bangladesh Press Council.

The Public Administration Ministry issued a gazette notification in this regard on Monday.

Huq resigned as chairman of International Crimes Tribunal (ICT)-1 on December 11 in 2012 amid controversy over his Skype conversation with a Bangladeshi expatriate legal expert Ahmed Ziauddin about the tribunal proceedings.

He was appointed as chairman of ICT-1 on March 25, 2010 for holding trials of those accused of 1971 war crimes.

Huq was a treasurer and lawyer for the Bangladesh human rights organisation Odhikar before joining the High Court.

He was first appointed judge of the High Court by President Shahabuddin Ahmed, a former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Huq was reappointed to the High Court by President Zillur Rahman, on 24 March 2009.
