Cumilla-7 by-polls: Pran Gopal elected unopposed

Former vice-chancellor of BSMMU Professor Pran Gopal Datta, who is the candidate of ruling Awami League, has been declared elected unopposed in Cumilla-7 by-polls.

Returning Officer and Cumilla Regional Election Officer Md Dulal Talukder confirmed the matter to Jago News on Monday morning. 

Dulal said Pran Gopal was the only person remains in race of membership in parliament after National Awami Party (NAP) nominee Monirul Islam withdrew his candidature on Saturday. The election result was confirmed after the deadline for withdrawal of candidature ended at 5:00pm yesterday.

The seat fell vacant on July 30 after former deputy speaker Ali Ashraf, then MP of the constituency, died at a hospital in Dhaka.

Pran Gopal was born at Mohichail village in Chandina upazila on October 1 in 1953. He was awarded Independence Award in 2012.
