2 killed in ‘gunfight’ with cops in Jhenidah

Two suspected criminals were killed in a ‘gunfight’ with police at Tentulbaria in sadar upazila early Friday.

The victims were identified as Shahid Al-Mahmud, 25, son of Rajab Ali Mollah of Badanpur village and Anis Ahmed, 24, of Kushtia.

Azbahar Ali Sheikh, additional superintendent of police, Jhenaidah, said a gang of criminals were taking preparation to commit crime on Tentulbaria-Naldanga road around 2:30 am.

When a patrol team of police went there, the criminals hurled 4/5 crude bombs and fired shots targeting them, forcing the law enforcers to retaliate, triggering a gunfight.

At one stage, two gang members were caught in the line of fire and died on the spot while their other associates managed to flee.

Three policemen, including a sub-inspector, were also injured in the incident.

Police also recovered two rounds of bullet, five bombs and six sharp weapons from the spot.

The bodies were taken to Sadar Hospital morgue.
