Bangladesh extends border closure with India

Bangladesh government has extended border closure with India for more 14 days as the neighbouring country's coronavirus cases and deaths keep hitting newer daily records.

The decision came from a virtual meeting with Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen in the chair amid the report of two people's diagnosis with the highly contagious Indian COVID-19 variant in Jashore on Saturday.

Sources in the meeting said the Bangladeshi citizens who are now in India for medical treatment, and their visa validity will expire within the next 15 days can only return home through Benapole, Akhaura, and Burimari land ports.

Earlier on April 25, the government decided to shut the border with India for two weeks from April 26 in an effort to prevent transmission of the virus from the latter country.

The closure, however, applies to travelers but import and export activities through the border will continue.
