Govt imposes one-week lockdown

With a view to preventing the spread of the novel coronavirus, the government has imposed countrywide lockdown for one week from Monday to April 11.

The Cabinet Division issued a notification in this regard on Sunday.

As per the notification, the restrictions during the lockdown as follows:

  • All types of public transport (Road, waterway, rail, and domestic flight) will remain shut but the emergency services providing vehicles will be out of the purview of the curbs;
  • All government/semi-government/autonomous offices and court and private offices can be opened only for urgent works with limited number of employees' presence;
  • Factories can operate but the authorities concerned will have to arrange transport services for the workers in own management;
  • People will not be allowed to go out between 6pm and 6am without very urgent needs (such as buying medicine and essential materials, medical treatment, burying etc.);
  • Food shops and hotel-restarutant can only sell/provide food and in any way, will not allow the customers take food sitting there;
  • Shopping malls and markets will stay shut but the shops can sell wholesale and retail products online following the coronavirus health guidelines.
  • Kitchen items and daily essentials can be sold and bought only in open spaces. 

Bangladesh government on Friday (April 2) reported the highest daily record of 6,830 coronavirus cases.

As of Saturday (April 3), the country's total infections and deaths stood respectively at 6,30,277 and 9,213. 

The country first reported its COVID-19 cases on March 8 last year. Since then it has been struggling to curb spread of the highly contagious virus.
