All elections including 371 UP polls postponed

All elections, including the first phase Union Parishad, and the sixth phase municipal polls, have been postponed.

Besides, the by-polls to Lakshmipur-2 constituency slated for April 11 has also been postponed.

The Election Commission (EC) on Thursday took the decision amid an alarming rise in the coronavirus infections for the last couple of days.

EC additional secretary Ashok Kumar Debnath came up with the disclosure at a press conference held at Nirbachan Bhaban.

He said the postponement will remain effective until further notice, and decision on the by-polls to Sylhet-3 constituency would be informed later.

The Election Commission on March 3 announced schedules for 11 municipal, and 371 Union Parishad elections.

It also declared the same for by-polls to Lakshmipur-2 parliamentary seat.

Bangladesh government, however, reported daily record of 6,469 coronavirus cases, taking the total infections to 6,17,764.

It also reported a total of 9,105 deaths from the deadly virus, so far.

Bangladesh first reported its COVID-19 cases on March 8 last year. Since then it has been struggling to curb spread of the highly contagious virus.
