7 die in fire at Rohingya camp in Cox’s Bazar

Seven people including two children died after a massive fire broke out at Balukhali Rohingya camp in Ukhiya of Cox’s Bazar on Monday afternoon.

Identities of the deceased could not be known immediately. 

Eleven thousand houses of Rohingyas and several hundred houses of local people were gutted in the fire.   

Md Abdullah, Deputy Director of Fire Service and Civil Defence in Cox’s Bazar, confirmed the matter to Jago News on Tuesday morning. 

Earlier on Monday night, Md Atiqul Islam, Superintendent of Police and also Commander of the Armed Police Battalion, told journalists that eight people including three children died in the fire.  

Nizam Uddin Ahmed, Ukhiya Upazila Nirbahi Officer, said it is suspected that houses of 11 thousand Rohingya people were gutted in the fire. Houses of more than hundred local people were also gutted. 

To be noted, a massive fire broke out at Balukhali 8 ‘E’ and ‘W’ No. Rohingya camps around 4pm on Monday that engulfed 9 and 10 No. Rohingya camps. The fire came under control around 11pm.
