Teacher sent to jail over torture of madrasa student

A court in Chattogram on Thursday sent a madrasa teacher to jail in a case filed over the torture of an eight-year-old student in Hathazari upazila.

The district Judicial Magistrate Zihan Sanzida passed the order this afternoon.

Earlier on Wednesday afternoon, police arrested accused Yahya from Safarbhata area of Rangunia upazila of the district.

Yahya, a teacher of Markazul Quran Islami Academy Madrasa in the upazila, allegedly beat up his student Yasin on Tuesday afternoon in a cruel manner for reportedly going after its mother.

On the night, a video of the incident went viral on social media that sparked huge criticism and protests.

In the video, the teacher was seen taking the child to his room holding its neck and then mercilessly beating up with a cane.

Being informed, Hathazari Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ruhul Amin rescued the minor boy from there around 1:30am on Wednesday.

Later, the victim's mother Parveen registered a case with Hathazari Police Station in this connection.

The High Court, however, today asked the district commissioner (DC), superintendent of police (SP), and the police station officer in-charge (OC) to inform it by March 14 what steps they have taken over the incident of torture.
