Cartoonist Kishore released from jail

Cartoonist Ahmed Kabir Kishore has been released from jail after around ten months in prison.

“He was freed from Kashimpur Central Jail-2 at 12:25pm on Thursday after his bail papers reached the jail at 11am,” said jail super Abdul Jalil.

Earlier on Wednesday, the High Court granted a six months’ anticipatory bail to Kishore in a case filed under the Digital Security Act.

Kishore has been in jail since May last year following his arrest along with writer Mushtaq Ahmed, who died in prison, on charges of propagating disinformation against the government on social media in a case started by the Rapid Action Battalion.

On February 23, the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police filed a petition seeking three-day remand for Mushtaq and Kishore, just two days before Mushtaq’s death in jail.

During March and April last year, Kishore's cartoons “Life in the Time of Corona,” satirizing the country’s response to Covid-19, were posted on Facebook.
