Cartoonist Kishore gets bail

The High Court has granted a six months’ anticipatory bail to cartoonist Ahmed Kabir Kishore in a case filed under the Digital Security Act.

The bench of Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman passed the order on Wednesday.

Barrister Jyotirmoy Barua represented Kishore while Deputy Attorney General Sarwar Hossain represented the state.

Kishore has been in jail since May last year following his arrest along with writer Mushtaq Ahmed, who died in prison, on charges of propagating disinformation against the government on social media in a case started by the Rapid Action Battalion.

On February 23, the Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police filed a petition seeking three-day remand for Mushtaq and Kishore, just two days before Mushtaq’s death in jail.

During March and April last year, Kishore's cartoons “Life in the Time of Corona,” satirizing the country’s response to Covid-19, were posted on Facebook.
