Sunway University students initiate culture promotion in conjunction with Int'l Mother Language Day

Students and established professionals from 31 countries came together to commemorate the International Mother Language Day.

As the Day was approaching, student Bristi Khatun of Sunway university and her team came about the idea of creating a project with the idea of forming a momentary unison of culture promotion. Ms. Bristi, who is from Bangladesh herself and well aware of the history and origin of this annual observance, intended to show a brief commemoration of the anniversary and simultaneously show a unity of different ethnicities and nationalities. The attempt was to create a moment for everyone to gather in hopes of preserving their diverse cultures and which multiple countries will show their love for their languages. However due to the SOPs implemented by the government in response to the novel virus, it was unlikely that the project will be conducted practically. The only option was to initiate the project virtually. The goal was to have participants from 20 countries who are students and non-students to submit a short clip which they’ll say the line “This is my mother language” in representation of their country and their own language. For each country to merely translate this line it could show a brief demonstration of pride but also independence.

”Our intention was to build a concept of connectivity globally without such language barriers” stated by Ms. Bristi when questioned the purpose of creating this project.

The difficulty lied when reaching out to several universities abroad to participate as most weren't willing to offer any students. However, some students as well as working adults were willing to come forth to showcase their language. Ms. Bristi managed to gather participants from 31 countries to contribute their effort for this annual observance.
