Verdict in Avijit murder case on Feb 16

A tribunal in Dhaka on Thursday fixed February 16 to deliver its verdict in blogger and writer Avijit Roy murder case.

Dhaka Anti-Terrorism Special Tribunal Judge Mojibur Rahman set the date after the prosecution and defence both concluded their arguments.

On August 1, 2020, the tribunal framed charges against six accused - major (dismissed) Syed Mohammad Ziaul Haque alias Zia, Mozammel Hussain alias Saymon (organizational name Shahriar), Abu Siddique Sohel alias Shakib alias Sazid alias Shahab, Akram Hossain alias Abir, Md Arafat Rahman and Shafiur Rahman Farabi.

Earlier on March 13, 2019, police's Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit inspector Monirul Islam submitted charge sheet against the accused before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarafuzzaman Ansari. Later the anti terrorism tribunal accepted the charge sheet.

On February 27, 2015, Avijit's father and prominent educationist Ajoy Roy filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station in this connection.

On February 26, 2015, the miscreants hacked Avijit beside Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka University's TSC area, leaving him critically injured. Later, he succumbed to his injuries at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
