Bangladesh coronavirus deaths cross 8000

The number of coronavirus deaths in Bangladesh exceeded 8000 on Saturday as the country recorded 22 more fatalities in the last 24 hours.

With today's count, the death toll rose to 8003, the Directorate General of Health Services said in a press release today.

During the period, 436 more people were diagnosed with the virus, raising the total infection to 5,31,326.

Of the total patients, 4,75,899 recovered, with 338 made recovery in the last 24 hours.

The daily count came from test of 11,115 samples in the past day. With this, a total of 35,42,389 samples have, so far, been tested.

Bangladesh first reported its COVID-19 cases on March 8. Since then the country has been struggling to limit spread of the highly contagious virus.

Coronavirus first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December last year, and then spread to newer countries and territories.

Till date, the epidemic infected 98,809,617 people and killed 2,118,035 across the globe, according to Worldometer, a website which compiles number of new coronavirus cases and deaths from it.

However, total number of people who recovered from the coronavirus pandemic reached 71,016,544 across the world.
