Bangladeshi killed by Myanmar border guards
A Bangladesh national has been killed in firing by the members of Myanmar's Border Guard Police (BGP) in the Naf River.
The deceased was identified as Mohammad Islam, 35, a rsident of Boroitali area in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar district.
Nazir Ahmed, member of 9 no. ward under Sadar Union Parishad, said Mohammad was shot by BGP members when he and two other fishermen went to the Naf River to catch fish on Saturday night.
He was rushed to Teknaf Sadar Hospital and later taken to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, Nazir said.
Teknaf-2 Border Guard Bangladesh Lt. Colonel Mohammad Faisal Hasan Khan said they were informed that a Bangladeshi youth died while undergoing treatment after being shot by BGP.
A few fishermen intruded Myanmar's maritime border to catch fish at nght. Sensing their presence, the country's border police opened fire on them, leaving one bullet-hit injured who later died, the BGB official added.
The official said it is not confirmed whether they went to catch fish or for any other reason.
BGB, however, in a protest letter warned BGP of groundless killing of Bangladeshi nationals by the latter force.
In response, BGP said they opened fire on the Bangladeshis thinking them terrorists inside their border, BGB official Faisal added.
Teknaf Model Police Station inspector (investigation) Abdul Alim said they learnt a man received bullet-injury but not informed about his death.
