Rape in MC College: BCL leader Saifur arrested

Police have arrested Saifur Rahman, a Bangladesh Chattra League (BCL) leader and the main accused in a case filed over rape of a woman in Murari Chand College of Sylhet.

Confirming the arrest to Jago News, Kaiyum Chowdhury, officer-in-charge of Shah Poran Police Station, said they arrested Saifur from Chhatak upazila in Sunamganj on Sunday morning.

Saifur, son of Tahid Miah, of village Chandaipara in Balaganj upazila, is also accused in an arms case. 

Police conducted a drive in his room of the college hostel after the rape incident and recovered a pipe gun, four machetes, two iron pipes and some other weapons around 3am on Saturday.

Earlier on Friday night, a married couple was visiting the college campus when some BCL men forced both of them to the hostel and gang-raped the wife while keeping the husband tied with a rope.

Police rescued the woman around 10pm and got her admitted to a hospital more than two hours later.

The husband filed the case later that night with Shahporan Police Station accusing Saifur Rahman, 28, of Sylhet’s Balaganj, Shah Mahbubur Rahman Roni, 25, of Habigaj town, Arjun Lasker, 25, of Sylhet’s Zakiganj, Mahfuzur Rahman Masum, 25, of Sylhet’s Kanaighat, Tarek Ahmed, 28, of Sunamganj town, and Rabiul Islam, 25, of Sunamganj's Derai upazila. The husband also accused 2-3 unnamed men.
