Coronavirus deaths in Bangladesh cross 5000

The deaths related to the novel coronavirus exceeded 5000 in Bangladesh on Tuesday.

The country recorded 28 more fatalities from the virus in the past 24 hours, taking the total to 5,007.

During the period, 1,557 people newly caught the deadly virus, taking the country's tally to 3,52,178, the Directorate General of Health Services said in a press release.

The press statement said 14,164 samples were tested in the past day. With this, the number of total sample tests reached 18,48,487.

However, 2,073 more COVID-19 patients made recovery, bringing the total recovery to 2,60,790.

Bangladesh first reported its COVID-19 cases on March 8. Since then the country has been struggling to limit spread of the highly contagious virus.

Coronavirus first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December last year, and then spread to newer countries and territories.

As of Tuesday, the epidemic infected 31,506,890 people and killed 969,799 across the globe, according to Worldometer, a website which compiles number of new coronavirus cases and deaths from it.

However, total number of people who recovered from the coronavirus pandemic reached 23,134,704 across the world.
