Husband to die for killing wife

A Panchagarh court on Monday convicted a man and sentenced him to death for killing his wife in 2012.

The convict was identified as Nimai Chandra Barman, 31, son of Anil Chandra Barman hailing Atwari upazila of the district.

The court also fined him Tk 25000.

According to prosecution, Nimai had been married with Sonali Rani on August 13, 2008 and members of her in laws house started tortured her for dowry.

On 12 November in the year, strangulated Sonali to death and hung the body with a tree beside his house.

Koruna Kanta Roy, father of Sonali filed a case with Atwari Police Station against Nimai, his father Anil Chandra, mother Roma Bala and 4 others under Women & Children Repression Prevention Act 2000 on the following day.

After examining the records and nine witnesses District and Session Judge M A Nur handed down the verdict while convict’s father and mother were acquitted as the crime against them could not be proved.
