Suspended DGHS office assistant Abzal denied bail

A Dhaka court has sent the suspended office assistant of Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) Abzal Hossen to the jail after rejecting his bail petition in two cases filed for illegally amassing wealth of Tk 36 crore.

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge KM Imrul Kayes passed the order on Wednesday.

Earlier on August 23, Abzal surrendered before the same court and also filed a bail petition. Later, his lawyer withdrew the petition.

On 27 June, 2019, ACC deputy director Md Tofiqul Islam filed the two cases against Abzal and his wife with ACC integrated district office, Dhaka 1, accusing the couple of committing the corruption.

The health ministry suspended Afzal Hossain on charges of corruption on January 14 last year.

On January 21, Dhaka metropolitan sessions judge court ordered confiscation of all property owned by Afzal and his wife Rubina Khanam and freezing all of their bank accounts in a case filed by the ACC.

On March 18, ACC confiscated Afzal’s five-storey building, Tamanna Villa, located on road 11 of sector 13 in Uttara.
