Dacoit leader killed in Narail ‘gunfight’

An inter-district dacoit leader was killed in an alleged gunfight with police at Dighlia Dakkhinpara of Lohagara upazila in Narail in the early hours of Saturday.

The dead man is Rakib Sheikh, 30, son of Mokles Sheikh, village of Chachoi of the upazila.

Police recovered a homemade pistol, three round bullets from the spot. Three police members including a Sub Inspector Mizan were also injured during the gunfight.

Officer-in-charge of Lohagara Police Station Biplob Kumar said, Rakib along with his cohorts were taking preparation to commit robbery at Dighlia Dakkhinpara. Acting on a secret information patrol police rushed to the spot. Sensing presence of the police, dacoit members opened fire on them. In replying, police also fired shots and Rakib was injured and his cohorts managed to flee away.

Later Rakib was sent to Lohagar upazila health complex where the duty doctor declared him dead, he said.

He added that, Rakib was the leader of the inter-district robbery gang. He was accused in 12 cases with Lohagar, Narail and Gopalganj police station.
