Dr Azad's contract with govt cancelled

The government has cancelled contractual appointment of prof Dr Abul Kalam Azad as director general of the Directorate General of Health Services.

The Ministry of Public Administration issued a gazette notification in this regard on Thursday.

The contract was cancelled two days after Dr Azad resigned as DG of health directorate on Tuesday amid criticism over his handling of coronavirus pandemic.

The notification said contractual appointment of DGHS chief was repealed from July 21 as per article 7 of the treaty with government.

The government appointed Dr Abul Kalam Azad as director general of the Directorate General of Health Services on August 21, 2016.

After his tenure ended on September 1 last year, he was reappointed in the post on contractual basis for two more years which is supposed to end on April 14 next year.

Dr Azad has been criticized over various activities since the coronavirus outbreak started in the country. 

He experienced backlash following his comment that coronavirus situation would last two to three years more.

Dr Azad faced criticizm over distribution of normal masks in packet of N-95 masks in different hospitals, and Regent Hospital, and JKG Health Care's COVID-19 test scam.
