Jamuna Group chairman Babul laid to rest
Jamuna Group Chairman Nurul Islam Babul, who died of COVID-19 on Monday, has been laid to rest.
The freedom fighter and eminent businessman was buried with state honours at Banani graveyard around 2:30pm on Tuesday.
Earlier, his namaz-e-janaza was held at the premises of Jamuna Future Park mosque, Dhaka at about 1:45pm.
A large number of people, including relatives, friends, co-workers, well-wishers, took part in the namaz-e-janaza following coronavirus health guidelines.
Nurul Islam Babul, also founder of daily Jugantor and Jamuna Television, passed away around 3:30pm on Monday in a city hospital. He aged 74.
He left behind his wife Salma Islam, a parliament member and former state minister for women and children affairs, son Shameem Islam, managing director of Jamuna Group, three daughters- Rozalin Islam, Monika Islam and Sonia Islam- directors of the group, relatives, well-wishers and so on to mourn his death.
Earlier on June 14, he tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus.
Born in Nawabganj upazila of Dhaka district on May 3, 1946, Babul established Jamuna Group in 1974 that subsequently became one of the largest industrial conglomerates in Bangladesh.
Besides, the businessman founded 41 other establishments one after another under the group that employed more than 50,000 people.
At the funeral prayers, Nurul Islam Babul's son Shameem said his father laid foundation to march the country forward and create employment by establishing many establishments.
He also sought forgiveness for his father from all if they get hurt by him during his life.
