Bangladesh Covid-19 deaths reach 1,997, cases 159,679

The number of COVID-19 deaths in Bangladesh has neared 2000.

The country recorded 3,288 new cases and 29 deaths related to the virus in the past 24 hours.

With this, total infections and fatalities in the country stood at 159,679 and 1,997 respectively.  

Professor Nasima Sultana, ADG of the Directorate General of Health Services, came up with the disclosure at its daily health bulletin on Saturday.

She said 14,727 samples were examined in the last 24 hours, bringing the total number of sample tests to 832,074 in the country.

A total of 70,721 coronavirus patients have, so far, made recovery, with 2,637 recovered in the past day.

Bangladesh first reported its COVID-19 cases on March 8. Since then the country has been witnessing sharp increase in the infections and deaths. 

Coronavirus first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December last year, and then spread to newer countries and territories.

As of Saturday, the epidemic infected 11,204,889 people and killed 529,380 across the globe, according to Worldometer, a website which compiles number of new coronavirus cases and deaths from it.

However, total number of people who recovered from the coronavirus pandemic reached 6,354,219 across the world.
