The number of deaths from the novel coronavirus in Bangladesh stood at 1,968, with 42 new fatalities in the past 24 hours.

During the period, 3,114 people newly caught the highly contagious disease, taking the country's total to 156,391. 

Prof Nasima Sultana, ADG of the Directorate General of Health Services, came up with the disclosure at its daily health bulletin on Friday.

She said 14,650 samples were examined in the last 24 hours. With this, the total number of sample tests reached 817,347 in the country. 

A total of 68,048 coronavirus patients have, so far, made recovery, with 1,606 recovered in the past day.

Prof Nasima said in the bulletin that detection rate of new patients was 21.26 percent. 

The rate of recovery, so far, was 43.51 percent while mortality rate 1.26 percent, the oficial also said. 

Bangladesh first reported its COVID-19 cases on March 8. Since then the country has been witnessing increase in the infections and deaths. 

Coronavirus first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December last year, and then spread to 213 countries and territories.

As of Friday the epidemic infected 11,002,519 people and killed 524,436 across the globe, according to Worldometer, a website which compiles number of new coronavirus cases and deaths from it.

However, total recovery from the coronavirus pandemic reached 6,164,674 across the world.
