5 cops suspended over assaulting lawyers in Shariatpur
Five police men including an Assistant sub-inspector have been suspended in connection with the ‘attack’ on Shariatpur District Bar Council members.
Saifullah Al Mamun, police Superintendent of the district took the decision against ASI Shahin Sardar, Constables Helal Uddin, Sohel, Rasel and Liton on Monday.
Earlier, on 2 June, a team of detective branch (DB) entered into lawyer Masudur Rahman Masum’s chamber to arrest one Shahen Shah Dhali, son of Shahajanha Dhali, a resident in Zajira upazila of the district.
In the meantime, Masum locked into an altercation with the DB members as they failed to show arrest warrant against Shahen Shah.
Following the altercation DB members and members of Bar Council engaged in a clash, leaving several lawyers and four policemen injured.
On Sunday, in a press release, Bar Council leaders declared work strike protesting the incident and demanded suspension of the cops.
Later, Saifullah Al Mamun, SP of the district suspended the cops after a meeting with the leaders of Bar Council.
