255 pry teachers, 14 students catch Covid-19

A total of 255 teachers and 14 students of primary education in Bangladesh have, so far, tested positive for COVID-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. 

Besides, 37 officials and 23 employees also caught the lethal virus, according to an update on coronavirus prepared by the Directorate of Primary Education.

The data said five teachers and one official died of COVID-19 while 49 made recovery.

Out of the recovered, 34 teachers, five officials, three employees and seven pupils.

The infected primary teachers said they have been facing extreme hardship alongwith family members with low salary.

DPE said it has recently started collected data about of coronavirus-affected teacher-student and official-employee of primary education and updating the information on its website.

Md Samsuddin Masud, president of Government Primary School Assistant Teachers' Association, said the number of actual infections would be more higher.

More than 500 teachers contracted the highly contagious disease across the country, he said, adding that many do not give sample for test and take treatment at home in fear o social harassment.
