Bangladesh coronavirus deaths cross 700; cases over 50,000

The coronavirus related deaths in Bangladesh surpassed 700 and cases exceeded 50,000, with 37 fatalities in the past 24 hours.

During the period, the country saw biggest daily jump of 2911 COVID-19 cases, taking the total such infections to 52,445. 

Some 12,704 people's samples were examined in a day, the most till date. Out of them, 2911 tested positive for COVID-19, DGHS's ADG prof Dr Nasima Sultana said on Tuesday.

And 37 more people died from the deadly disease, the second highest number of deaths since the outbreak. With this, the death toll reached 709.

A total of 11,120 COVID-19 patients recovered, with 523 new ones, she mentioned in Directorate General of Health Services' regular bulletin on the virus. 

She also said that 3,33,073 samples, so far, were examined in the country. 

Prof Nasima called on all to stay at home and follow health guidelines issued by the health department to stem the transmission of the pathogen.

Bangladesh first reported its coronavirus cases on March 8. Since then the country has been witnessing increase in the infections and deaths.

The highly contagious virus first emerged in the Chinese city of Wuhan in December last year, and then spread to 213 countries and territories.

As of Tuesday, the pathogen infected 6,388,116 people and killed 377,862 across the globe, according to Worldometer, a website which compiles number of new coronavirus cases and deaths from it.

However, total recovery from the coronavirus pandemic reached 2,921,865 across the world.
