3 die, 30 missing as boat capsizes in Jamuna

Three people including a child died and at least thirty others went missing after a passenger boat capsized in the Jamuna river at Chauhali upazila in Sirajganj on Tuesday afternoon.

Two of the deceased were identified as Pashan Ali, 65, of village Goinakandi in Belkuchi upazila and Sheikh Kamal Hossen, 40, of Nagarpur in Tangail. 

“At least thirty people including the parents of the dead child are still missing. Members of police and fire service are trying to rescue them,” said Chauhali Upazila Nirbahi Officer Dewan Moudud Ahmed.

Rashedul Islam, officer-in-charge of Chauhali Police Station, said the incident took place at Stholchar area when a boat with 80 to 90 passengers on board from Enayetpur was going to Chauhali. 

“Three bodies were recovered from the spot and 35-40 people were also rescued alive. Most of the passengers are paddy-harvesting workers,” the OC added.
