Youth beaten dead in police custody, family alleges
A young man has been beaten dead in police custody in Barguna, family alleged.
The victim was identified as Mohammad Sanu Hawlader, a resident of Kalagachhia village in Amtali upazila.
It came to know that Amtali Police Station arrested Sanu as suspect in a murder case on March 24, and he died on Thursday in police custody.
Jharna Begum, wife of the victim, alleged that police beaten her husband to death after he refused to give bribe Tk 3 lakh to the cops. Now they are trying to establish his death as suicide case, she added.
Sources in ditrict police said Amtali Police Station officer in-charge (investigation) Monoronjan Mistri and duty officer sub-inspector Arif were dismissed followig the incident.
A three-member probe commitee was also formed to look into the matter. Barguna additional police superintendent Md Tofayel Ahmed will lead the investigation, the sources added.
After visiting the spot, the district police superintendent Maruf Hossain said appropriate action will be taken after fact finding through fair investigation to ensure justice to the victim's family.
