Ex-AL MP Awal, wife sent to jail in graft cases
A Dinajpur court has sent former Awami League lawmaker of Pirojpur AKMA Awal and his wife Laila Irad, in three corruption cases filed for grabbing government lands in Pirojpur district.
Pirojpur District and Sessions Judge Md Abdul Mannan passed the order around 12pm on Tuesday.
Earlier on January 7, High Court (HC) granted an eight-week anticipatory bail to Awal and his wife Laila in three corruption cases and ordered them to surrender before the trial court concerned in eight weeks.
On December 30 last year, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed three cases against Awal and his wife Laila.
Earlier on December 24, the commission imposed a travel ban on them for grabbing government lands.
According to the case statement, former ruling party lawmaker Awal, misusing his power while in office, leased government land by providing false information and built a three storied building there in his wife’s name.
Later, that building was rented to Pirojpur Rural Electrification Association. In a separate incident, the couple grabbed another piece of government land in Swarupkat upazila of the district and built a house there.
The former ruling party lawmaker and his wife have also been accused of taking hold of a half-acre plot of government land and building an illegal wall around it in Pirojpur district.
