Saying that various offenses like snatching are on rise in the city's dark lanes and bylanes, DMP Addl Commissioner Abdul Baten on Saturday stressed the effective measures by authorities concerned to put an end to the crimes.

He said, "There are lampposts in city streets, and lanes and bylanes but most of these do not work where the incidents of snatching happen. So authorities concerned should give attention to this and take measures, including lighting."

"Besides, city dwellers should walk cautiously in such dark streets, and lanes and bylanes," Baten also said at a press conference at the media center of Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

Detectives of DMP detained 42 alleged snatchers from different parts of the city in drives between Friday and early Saturday. Some 85 snatched mobile handsets, knives, and sharp weapons were also recovered from their possession.

At the press conference, Addl Commissioner Abdul Baten claimed that the nabbed all are professional snatchers, and accused in cases with different police stations.

The police official said they found in their enquiry that those run mobile parts shops in different city markets, including Bashundhara, and Motaleb Plaza, buy the stolen mobiles.

"We've identified those involved with buying and selling of snatched mobile. Soon we'll conduct operation in that places," Baten said.

What the steps police will take in this regard, he replied to this query that they will strengthen patrols in bus stops and launch terminals from midnight to till morning when snatching occurs more in the areas, and also surveillance by detectives.

Amid DB's drives, one Tarina Begum, 35, received severe injuries near Kamalapur Railway Station early Saturday after she fell from rickshaw while resisting snatchers' bid to take away her purse.

She was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where the on-duty doctors declared her dead.

Asked about this, DMP official Baten said they are looking into the matter, and the offenders must face justice.
