Torture on fellow for not greeting Salaam; 4 students expelled
Four students in Barishal have faced expulsion over the torture of a fellow student in the name of 'ragging'.
They are Sagor Biswas Debjit and Saikat Das, second year students of Radiology department, Piyas Chandra Kuri as well as Md Imon, same year students of Dental department of Barishal Institute of Health Technology.
Besides, the four students have also been expelled for life from dormitory of the institution.
Academic council members took the decision after a meeting on Wednesday afternoon.
Among the four, Sagor and Imon have been expelled for one year while Piyas and Saikat for six months from academic activities.
The ragging victim, Md Salauddin, hails from Noakhali. He, a second year student of Dental department, lives a residential hall of the institute.
Several residential students said the expelled students on January 26 entered the room of Salauddin and wanted to know, "Why you (Salauddin) do not greet Salaam when meet us. You did impertinence. So, leave the hall right now."
Not only that but they also scolded him in vulgar language.
At one stage, Salauddin protested the misbehaviour that angered the four. They beat up him severely with stick, leaving him unconscious.
Later, he was taken to Sher-e-Bangla Medical Hospital where he is now undergoing treatment.
On the following day, the institution came to know the matter, and its principal Dr Saiful Islam formed a probe body over the incident.
Principal Saiful said they punished four students with expulsion so that none can dare to do such acts in future.
Earlier on October 25 last year, a second year female student of Physiotherapy department of the same institute attempted suicide after she experienced ragging that sparked huge outrage.
Ragging is the term used for the so-called "initiation ritual" practiced in higher education institutions in South Asian countries, including Bangladesh. It involves abuse, humiliation or harassment of freshers or junior students by the senior ones.
