Laldighi massacre case: 5 get death penalty

A Chittagong court has sentenced five people to death in the case filed for the massacre of 24 people who attended Awami League chief Sheikh Hasina’s rally in the Chittagong city in 1988.

Chittagong Divisional Special Judge (acting) Ismail Hossen passed the order on Monday afternoon.

The death-row convicts are Momtaj Uddin, Mostafijur Rahman, Pradip Barua, Gopal Chandra Mondol and Abdullah. Of them, Gopal is currently on the run. They all are the former members of police.

According to case documents, police opened fire on the motorcade when the then Awami League President Sheikh Hasina was on a truck and heading towards Laldighi Maidan to address a rally on January 24, 1988, during the rule of military dictator HM Ershad.

On March 5, 1992, lawyer Md Shahidul Huda filed a case with a Chittagong court.

On May 14, 1998, the police submitted a charge sheet against 47 persons.

Later, the court directed the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) seeking further investigation of the case.

On October 14, 1999, Abdul Kader Khan, Assistant Superintendent of Police (CID), submitted the supplementary charge sheet accusing seven people.
