Quader assures BNP of fair Dhaka city polls

Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader has assured BNP of fair and acceptable elections in two city corporations of Dhaka.

Calling upon BNP to take part in elections of Dhaka North and South City Corporations, Quader said, "I assure the government will give all kind of assistance to the Election Commission (EC) for holding fair election. You (BNP) come in polls, and voting would be held in fair manner."

Obaidul Quader, also general secretary of ruling Awami League, said this while talking to journalists at marriage ceremony of AKM Bahauddin Bahar, Awami League lawmaker from Cumilla Sadar seat, at Cumilla Circuit House on Wednesday afternoon.

The minister said BNP's propaganda about use of Electronic Voting Machine (EVMs) in Dhaka North and South city polls is not correct because election held with the latest technology was fair and BNP won in most cases.

Mentioning that use of EVM can create atmosphere of fair election, Quader said, "The government will not interfere in the polls and there is nothing to be worried."

Local Government, Rural Development and Co-operatives Minister Rajul Islam, Cumilla's deputy commissioner (DC) Md Abul Fazal Meer, the district police superintendent Syed Nurul Islam and Awami League central Science and Technology secretary engineer Abdus Sabur, among others, were present at the marriage ceremony along with Minister Obaidul Quader.
