Death of Diya, Rajib: Accused to know their fate Sunday

A Dhaka court is set to determine on Sunday fate of the accused in a case filed over death Diya and Rajib, who were killed in a fatal road crash on Airport Road in Dhaka.

Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge Imrul Kayes is expected to pronounce the case verdict tomorrow.

Earlier November 14, judge Imrul Kayes fixed December 1 to hand down the judgment after prosecution and defense concluded their respective arguments in the case.

A total of 37 out of 41 witnesses have testified before the court in the case.

Diya Khanam Mim and Abdul Karim Rajib, first year students of Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment College, were killed and 10-15 others wounded as a bus of 'Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan' ploughed through some students in front of Kurmitola General Hospital on July 29 in 2018.

Their tragic end on road angered the students across the country, including Dhaka, and they took to the streets protesting the incident, demanding safe roads and seeking exemplary punishment of the persons responsible for the accident.

Victim Mim's father Jahangir Alam, later, lodged a case with Dhaka Cantonment Police Station in this connection.

Kazi Shariful Islam, investigation officer of the case and inspector of detectives, submitted charge sheet against the accused before Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court on September 6, 2018.

On October 25 of the year, judge Imrul Kayes denied acquittal of the accused and framed charges against them.

Six people were accused in the case. Among them, Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan owner Jahangir Alam, two drivers Masum Billah and Zubayer Sumon and their assistants Enayet Hossain are in jail while another owner of the transport Shahadat Hossain is on bail. Case against him is stayed by the High Court. Kazi Asad, another assistant of drivers, is fugitive.
