Two BCL activists killed in 'shootout'

Two local activists of Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) were killed in a reported gunfight with police in Bypass area of Satkhira district town early Saturday.

Deceased Dwip, 22, was a resident of Munjitpur area of the town, and Saiful Islam, 28, of Saihati village in Kaliganj upazila. They lived in a rented house in Munjitpur area.

Police claimed the deceased were snatchers.

Sadar Police Station officer in-charge Mostafizur Rahman told Jago News that the duo were detained by Kaliganj police, and district detectives on Thursday night in connection with snatching away Tk 25 lakh of Bkash.

They confessed to their crimes, and police along with them conducted drive in Bypass area early hours of today to nab others involved in the wrongdoing.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, cohorts of the Dwip and Saiful locked into clash with them that triggered a shootout, leaving the duo dead, the OC said.

Police also recovered two foreign pistols, a bullet and a motorcycle used in snatching, OC Mostafizur added.

Satkhira district Chhatra League general secretary Sazedur Rahman, however, said deceased Dwip and Saiul were their activists. He does not know why police nabbed them, he added.
