Transport workers withdraw road block after 3 hours

Transport workers on Tuesday morning allowed vehicular movement on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway around three hours after they blocked the highway seeking repeal of new road transportation act.

They withdrew their blockade programme around 10:45am.

Earlier, the transport workers put up barricade on the highway at Mawna intersection in Shreepur upazila of Gazipur around 8am demanding scrapping the newly enacted Road Transportation Act 2018.

The blockade caused sufferings to the Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNISU) admission seekers, students of different schools and colleges and office goers.

Mawna Highway Police Station sub-inspector (SI) Ayub Hossain said the transport workers called off their blockade after police talked to them and requested to leave the highway.

The much talked Road Transportation Act 2018 came into effect from November 1.

On Monday, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) formally started enforcing the road transport act.
