Transport workers block highway seeking repeal of new act

Transport workers have blocked the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway in Shreepur upazila of Gazipur demanding cancellation of the newly enacted Road Transportation Act 2018.

They put up barricade at Mawna intersection around 8am on Tuesday.

The blockade caused sufferings to the Jatiya Kabi Kazi Nazrul Islam University (JKKNISU) admission seekers, students of different schools and colleges and office goers.

The workers said they will continue their movement until the road transport act is scrapped.

Mawna Highway Police Station sub-inspector (SI) Ayub Hossain said they are trying to convince the protesting workers to withdraw the blockade.

The much talked Road Transportation Act 2018 came into effect from November 1.

On Monday, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) formally started enforcing the road transport act.
