Suspected robber killed in 'gunfight'

A suspected robber was killed in a reported gunfight with police in Ashuganj upazila of Brahmanbaria early Wednesday.

Saddam Hossain, 26, was a resident of Beparipara area in Sarail upazila of the district.  

He was a member of robber gang and an accused in several cases of robbery, claimed Ashuganj Police Station officer in-charge (OC) Jabed Mahmud.

A coordinated team of district detectives, Ashuganj Police Station and Sadar Model Police Station conducted a drive in Jatrapur Chaparbari area to a dacoit gang.

Sensing presence of the law enforcers, the robbers opened fire on police, forcing them to fire back in self defense.

After the gun battle, police found Saddam dead, and detained three other members of the robber gang- Akash Mia, 27, Ridoy Mia, 25, and Ashraful Islam, 25, said OC Jabed.

A pistol, a CNG-run auto-rickshaw used in committing robbery and a motorcycle were recovered from the scene, the OC added.
